This painting is my interpretation of the Hawaiian Goddess, Pele, and the volcanic islands she created. The Griffin represents Hawaii, with a bright red beak to stand for the volcanoes of the archipelago. Those volcanoes were life-giving, making islands grow up from the sea and become lush from the fertile volcanic ash. But, just like a fierce griffin, those volcanoes can be life-taking as well. Deadly, and devastating, when they erupt. Folk-legends warn that if even a stone from a Hawaiian island is taken, the bearer will be cursed. And a terrible retribution could be delivered, the way a fearsome griffin might bite if provoked.
